Overseas Shipping Containers | Shipping Crate
Although a shipping crate can help with many applications, when it comes time to moving materials, inventory or other goods across oceans or seas, overseas shipping containers almost always need to be used. These types of containers are made of steel and can be stacked several units (some say seven) high.
Overseas shipping containers are typically found moving goods and materials on container ships, railroads and transport trucks. In many configurations, overseas shipping containers are moved from one method of transport to another by specialized crane. For example, goods manufactured in the Midwest USA might be moved from the warehouse to the rail yard by transport trucks, the moved from rail to sea for a trip overseas, then back onto a train again for final delivery wherever the goods are needed.
These types of containers are eight feet high by eight feet wide and can measure twenty or forty feet in length. These are the two standards, but of course they continue to evolve and are now available in ”high” versions measuring nine and a half feet high as well as an “extended” version that is now forty five feet in length.
Capacity
Interior capacity will vary from size to size. However, a traditional 20-foot shipping container will accommodate a maximum load of 61,289 lbs or 28,200 kg. A traditional 40-foot shipping container will accommodate a maximum load of 57,759 lbs or 26,600 kg.
Volumes will differ with the smaller, 20-foot unit offering 1,169 feet-cubed of space and the larger, 40-foot unit offering 2,385 feet-cubed. This translates to 33.1 and 67.5 meters-cubed respectively.
There are different types of containers depending on the need. For example, insulated and refrigerated containers are available for temperature-sensitive goods that need to travel overseas. As well, some overseas shipping containers come equipped with side-doors (normally, the doors are found at one end) for oversized materials and goods.
In most configurations, containers are reused. This has created an industry on its own where companies lease out overseas shipping containers to one company at point A and lease it to another at point B and so forth. In some cases, the containers may never return to their native land before their useful life expires or they are sold to another leasing company in another region.
Considerations
Of course if you are shipping goods and require the use of overseas shipping containers, consider using a standard, traditional size. This not only improves container availability, but virtually guarantees compatibility with other transport vehicles (such as rail and road).
Alternate Use
Some shipping containers are used for artistic purposes. Others are used for housing. Given their construction and material, they are extremely durable and can withstand the elements well. As such, they can be used for cottage, cabin, or other constructions.
Primarily, overseas shipping containers are used to transport goods over great distances. They are relatively cost-effective whether they are purchased or leased and can withstand the elements thanks to their durable construction.
Overseas Shipping Containers
Overseas shipping containers are a mandatory cost of goods for businesses who are looking to move product. Overseas Shipping Containers are a form of the Shipping Crate.
